That time DMX came through Jackson, MI at The Rocket; that night he performed, broke up a fight and shot pool till 4am. One of the most impactful artists of my era. He dropped two albums – debut and sophomore – in the same year and went #1! Definitely changed the rap game and gave grimy Hip Hop some more legs. You already know if they’re coming through Michigan, Hood Illustrated had to be there. I got a dope story about the night I introduced DMX to Hood Illustrated Magazine.
Definitely one of my most memorable nights as a publisher. Jackson, MI in early September, probably Labor Day weekend. I can tell you about the 4am ride back to Lansing after staying 2+ hours because X wanted to shoot pool, break up fights, then he made the remaining crowd pray! I vividly remember our conversation and him looking on that poster to tell me who he knew. If he didn’t know them they wasn’t hot! He performed from the VIP section, the openers were DBC (DoughBoy CashOut), Dusty McFly and a few local artists. This was early stages of the mag and I can say that I am blessed to able to share some of these Hood Illustrated moments! |THIS. & Hood Illustrated
