We have a new-found appreciation for “There U Go” by Johnny Gill. The soulful ballad was one of several sultry jams on the soundtrack for movie ‘Boomerang’. Hearing Gill belt it live at Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort was a far more enjoyable experience than playing it on CD or a streaming outlet.
We were hand in Mt. Pleasant, MI on October 11, 2019 to witness Gill and his New Edition group mate Ralph Tresvant captivate and excite a packed house.
Screaming women of all ages, and a few guys sprinkled here and there, were visibly having a good time. Most of them were on their feet the entire time.
At one point, Gill performed “Perfect” from his current album ‘Game Changer II’. It features Tresvant, so the NE original casually strolled on stage to join in. Those who knew the song were really into it while others appeared to be awaiting something they were more familiar with. And they got it; the pair followed up with “Can You Stand the Rain” which not only got a tremendous ovation, but it launched every seated person from their seats to their feet.
Backed by an awesome band, some energetic dancers, and with Tresvant by his side, Gill sang “Wrap My Body Tight”, the LSG smash hit “Body”, and an extended version “My, My, MY”. During this song Gill ventured into the audience to sing to his adoring fans face-to-face before rejoining Trevant on stage to hand out roses.
Gill closed his set with an explosive rendition of “Rub You the Right Way”.
Early in the night Tresvant got things going with an upbeat performance. Much to the audience’s delight he welcomed them to singalong to his solo classics “Money Can’t Buy You Love”, “Sensitivity”, “Stone Cold Gentleman”, and “Do What I Gotta Do”. |THIS
