West coast rhymer K-Dee aka “The Freshest MC in the World” came out of nowhere with his 1994 solo release, Ass, Gas, or Cash (No One Rides for Free).
Far from an unknown, the past member of groups C.I.A. and Lench Mob wasn’t heavily buzzed about until he started “Hittin’ Corners” – his hit single which features one of the freshest first verses ever.
He opens, “Another day, dolla, Holla if you hear me/ Coming with the bumps in my ‘hoop as I swoop / Whoop – hear I am, The Mack, it’s clear I am, K-Dee, so baby, get with the program”.
Executive produced by Ice Cube, K-Dee’s honey-butter-smooth flow is perfectly complimented by laid back production. These soulful player anthems feel like a mix of Dr. Dre-inspired G-funk and smooth jazz.
Standouts include “Talk of the Town”, “Make the Music”, “Gigalos Get Lonely Too” featuring The Time’s Morris Day, and “Neva Was a Baller”.
This is a classic. The fact that it’s K-Dee’s only solo LP increases its rare luxury. There’s nothing to compare it against. |THIS.
