The funny thing about Kanye West’s debut album College Dropout is that initially no one wanted to give him a chance to prove himself.
No one believed he could craft a solid solo release.
According to legend, Kanye was told to stick to producing, which wasn’t entirely bad advice, but his persistence to be taken seriously as a recording artist resulted in this landmark LP.
Loaded with unique gems (“We Don’t Care”), Dropout spoke to a generation of young people who struggled. They failed, got setback, scratched, clawed, and second-guessed themselves. Kanye gave them a soundtrack for their coming-of-age challenges they faced.
An inventive musician, his knack for knock proved stellar. Musically moody and incredibly soulful, Kanye’s sample-laden beats ranged from party banger (“Get Em High” featuring Common and Black Thought) to lonely thought provoking (“Spaceship” featuring GLC and Consequence).
College Dropout found its place, and that was being one of the most surprising and best debut albums of all-time. |THIS.
