We’ve all encountered life changing albums.
This is what happened with countless individuals around the country once they heard Geto Boys’ 1989 sophomore LP Grip It! On That Other Level.
Introducing a new lineup of DJ Ready Red, Bushwick Bill, Willie D, and Scaface, the Rap-A-Lot Records quartet kept listeners spellbound with their dark, twisted tales and vivid lyrics. Its score handled mostly by Ready Red, these stories flowed over funky, bass-heavy beats. Each tune spiced touched with a hint of blues.
“No Sell Out”, “Talkin Loud Ain’t Saying Nothin”, and “Let a Ho Be a Ho” became universal ‘hood anthems.
“Mind of a Lunatic” is a brilliant albeit intimidating psychological thriller that begs to played again or, for stability purposes, avoided altogether.
Maybe you played this record continuously from beginning to end, then sat there thinking intently about what you’d just heard. After a bit of time passed you played it again, only this time more anxious for certain notes in the production. You anticipated particular standout lyrics.
Each time through Grip It! On That Other Level you heard something new, and something inside you – beliefs, fears, reservations, and attitude – changed. | THIS ENT
