The recording industry didn’t understand Paul’s Boutique, Beastie Boys’ sophomore album.

Their record label didn’t either.

Hip-hop fans, however, clearly understood it.

The Beasties go as the beat goes, as the sounds move them. This was keeping every offering fresh and rhyme-centric. Boutique is an amazingly blatant mishmash of break beats produced by Dust Brothers (E.Z. Mike and King Gizmo).

The album’s music is made entirely of, arguably, the most eclectic samples ever used. On each track here the New York-bread trio bounce off one another stylistically.

“High Plains Drifter” and “Shadrach” are perfect examples, two among many on this LP that will make you want to spin on your back with cardboard beneath you.

Listen to “3-Minute Rule” and “Shake Your Rump”, and try not to nod your head. It’s not possible unless you hate Hip Hop music.

Anyone who expected MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D to duplicate License to Ill wasn’t paying attention to their riled-up randomness or how influenced they were by their production.
