Tupac Shakur was dead, fatally shot September 7, 1996, when his 5th studio album was released that November.
His first of several posthumous albums, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory is considered one of the best LPs of his career.
Throughout its 12 tracks, Tupac’s emphatic, stern delivery and husky voice is complimented by the production of Hurt-M-Badd, Big D, and others.
Iconic diss track “Toss It Up” (featuring K-Ci & JoJo, Danny Boy and Aaron Hall) mixes Zapp-like funk with Guy-inspired R&B.
Pac’s snarky flow on QDIII-produced “To Live and Die in LA” (featuring Val Young) is layered over a G-Funk-inspired pop melody.
“Hail Mary” and “Blasphemy” are dark, ominous bangers with bass and lyrics that growl.
Using the pseudonym Makaveli, this masterpiece was rumored to have been recorded in just 7 days. Years later its cryptic lyrics are still being speculated. Whether or not Tupac predicted his own demise through eerie musical clairvoyance remains a popular debate.
None of his fans argue whether or not this album is a classic. | THIS ENT
