Being a writer with the use of the Internet has allowed me some cool, memorable experiences.
Early in my writing career I got to attend an event in Grand Rapids, Michigan featuring DJ Ill One. He and DJ Omega Supreme, then known as DJ Tobe 1, were spinning together. It was the first time I got to watch a duo DJ set in person. Because I was wearing a lanyard with a plastic tag hanging from it, I got to stand close.
When there was a break in the action, I would ask Ill One questions about learning to DJ, his technique, and how they were able to blend so seamlessly. He remarked about practice, audio production, and trusting your feelings. To me this was like being behind the curtain with Jam Master Jay.
I attended numerous events following this one, many of them featuring Ill One. During our first meeting I learned about the art from his point of view. From the others I learned how important he was to the Hip Hop community. He also became the first DJ I interviewed officially.
To this day Ill One remains a constant at Hip Hop events and a blessing to his community. He’s wiser, a master in the art if DJing, and still willing to share his experience and insight with others whether they’re wearing a lanyard with a plastic tag hanging from it or not.
It’s likely I’ll be wearing another one of those at ‘Return of the Boom Bap’, and I’ll be closely watching DJ Ill One do what he does so well. |THIS.

Renowned HipHop artist Sixman is coming home to Grand Rapids, MI to headline Return of the Boom Bap at The Pyramid Scheme (68 Commerce Ave SW) on Friday February 18, 2022. Presented by GRHIPHOP.org, THISENT.com, and FAM ENT, Six will be joined by acclaimed group The Fist Coalition, up-and-coming solo act Alfie Da Great, and DJ icons Monk Matthaeus and DJ Ill One. THISENT managing editor and event host Mr. Joe Walker will serve as the night’s MC.
