During every conversation I have with Sixman regarding his upcoming Return of the Boom Bap concert, at some point of it I’m taken back in time.
While discussing the value and dedication of DJ Monk Matthaeus, who is spinning on the February 18th show at The Pyramid Scheme, I flashed back 20 years to the night I met him.
It was during an event dubbed Hip Hop Explosion at a Grand Rapids, Michigan venue called The Grotto (RIP), and Markus Gramm of TheGrooveSpot.com and I were there to cover Sixman’s performance. Monk was also on the ticket; at the time he was a member of a crew called Swollen Heads. Gramm and I admittingly had our jokes about that name.
Yet, here’s the sincerest punchline: Monk grew to become a centerpiece of the Hip Hop community behind the ones and twos, as a mentor, educator, artist, curator, and encourager. Incredibly humble in the face of his many accomplishments and credits, Monk’s head is anything but swollen.
Monk is the founder of GRHIPHOP.org and the Co-founder/Vice President and Director of Elements of Change of Hip Hop Association of Advancement and Education.

Renowned HipHop artist Sixman is coming home to Grand Rapids, MI to headline Return of the Boom Bap at The Pyramid Scheme (68 Commerce Ave SW) on Friday February 18, 2022. Presented by GRHIPHOP.org, THISENT.com, and FAM ENT, Six will be joined by acclaimed group The Fist Coalition, up-and-coming solo act Alfie Da Great, and DJ icons Monk Matthaeus and DJ Ill One. THISENT managing editor and event host Mr. Joe Walker will serve as the night’s MC.
