I heard a few songs by The Fist Coalition a year or so before I met them. We eventually crossed paths during a show at The Loft in Lansing, Michigan. I was co-hosting the gig and they were scheduled to perform.
When I found them – Mic Hunter D and CeldomSeen, and I think Big Shaady too – they were sitting at a round top with their merch and gear.
Their aura reminded me of Public Enemy but in conversation they were more like the underground music and social journalists I’d engage with early in my career. Their time there was serious. Everything they said meant something.
Fist sat quietly to themselves, surveying the room while remaining focused on the task ahead. They had copies of Hood Illustrated Magazine with them on the cover and their gritty, no nonsense mixtape Black Holocaust. They were prepared to hit the stage with messages not just music.
I knew my introduction of them had to be telling and excitement building. Looking back, I hope I delivered with appropriate flatter.
What I remember vividly is the look on the faces of everyone I could see directly in front of the stage. As The Fist Coalition were projecting, those up front were nodding their heads hard with their eyes squinted.
They were listening. Intently.
