From what I recall, the feedback published about this Jurassic 5 album was mostly negative. After listening again, I think people who were new to J5 weren’t as quick to pan it. They were more open. For longtime supporters, however, I understand their frustrations.
J5 experimented a lot here. They too often abandoned their retro Hip Hop styles for more commercial-sounding, pop-like raps. The VH1-esce vocal choruses and production on “Gotta Understand” and “Brown Girl” may scare off the YO! MTV crowd J5 came to attract.
