Welcome to THIS edition of GOOD QUESTION, brought to you exclusively by THISent.com! I’m your host, “Word Heavyweight Champion” Mr. Joe Walker.
Throughout my illustrious career as an entertainment writer and journalist, I’ve been blessed with opportunities to speak with many notable and famous persons. Normally, this would be where I’d introduce a celebrity to answer one of my questions. This time I’m going to answer one being asked by several others.
Should Kobe Bryant be the new NBA logo?
My answer: Yes and no.
Not long after Kobe’s tragic passing on January 26, 2020 a petition began to circulate requesting the NBA make Kobe’s likeness the new NBA logo. And I get it.
There are others, however, who feel Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Shaquille O’Neal deserve to the NBA’s remade logo too.
But Kobe’s passing shouldn’t push him to the front of the line, even if the league was considering a change.
It’s such an emotional decision. The Jerry West logo is an iconic global figure, one with an incredible marketing history. Jordan’s Jumpman logo is, to date, it’s only rival and the NBA hasn’t adopted that one yet.
I understand the homage to Kobe but for other reasons it’s the best idea to me. If the NBA does decide to change the logo, and they do pick Kobe, I won’t have an issue with it for obvious reasons. | THIS.
