The year 2020 has been difficult. Despite its many challenges, empowering hip-hop artist and producer James Gardin made the most of it.

He released hit singles “Lovely”, “Pretty Painting”, “Soul Rich” (with TOSHIKI HAYASHI), “Shine Thru” (with MikeyyAustin), and “Ijuststartedlovingme” along with his tremendous compilation The Groove Collection.

James shared some of his time with us by answering THIS questionnaire about life in 2020 and what to expect from him in 2021.

How would you summarize 2020?

2020 has been super challenging. I heard someone use the quote that you need to “pivot or perish”. This year has challenged me so much to figure out a new way in all aspects of life.

Which of your blessings would you say was the biggest?

If I’m honest just surviving this joint has been the biggest blessing. There’s been so much loss this year that I’m just happy to be alive, healthy and have my family in the same position. I’m deftly happy that I’ve been able to continue to make music and make strides in that, but there’s been so many challenges this year that I’m just happy to still be here.

Did you read any good books that you would recommend to others?

I’ve started a couple books. I haven’t really finished any. I’m currently reading a book by Brene Brown. 2020 has definitely been a doozy.

What was the best song of the year?

“Wolves” by Jensen McRae. The vocal tone and writing of this record is just breathtaking. It’s just a beautiful record. I’m obsessed with it.

What were the movies or television shows that you couldn’t stop watching?

I honestly don’t really watch a lot of TV so I’ll just go with the most recent one I can think of. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Story was an amazing movie that warmed my heart.

Who were the artists you listened to the most?

The artist I listened to the most are Jensen McCrae , Duckwrth, Pop Smoke, Tiny Jag, Bartees Strange, and Arlo Parks to name a few.

What did you Google the most?

I probably googled how to use “insert streaming site/software here”. With everything going virtual I feel like I’ve been just nerving out on learning how to make my virtual shows feel the same as regular shows. I know that’s pretty impossible, but I’m still trying to figure out what works best for me.

Tell us the most surprising thing you heard all year.

I mean without getting in trouble there’s a lot of conspiracies I heard that are pretty surprising. But I would say in March hearing that we were shutting everything down was super surprising.

Where were you when you learned about COVID-19 and how did you respond?

I have a lot of friends who live all around the world. One of my friends from South Korea was telling me about it. I think at first I thought it wasn’t going to reach us … but alas here we are.

How were you helped and hurt by the pandemic?

I definitely got hurt at the no show level and not being able to be social with friends.  I think it helped me use my organizing and talent of learning things to my advantage. I’ve still been able to be creative with finding ways to work virtually. That’s definitely helped me do more in these times.

Did you vote?

Yes, I did Vote.

Did 2020 cause you to value your life and the lives of others more than you did already?

I voted because I definitely think it’s an important part that we play as citizens to help work with our government on the local and federal level. I encourage everyone to vote and learn how our government works to grow as a more informed voter as well.

What can we expect from you in 2021?

I’m working on a self-produced album, another beat tape, and working on pitching a lot for licensing. In 2021 you can expect a lot more music and art from me. |THIS.
