Welcome to THIS edition of GOOD QUESTION, brought to you exclusively by THISent.com! I’m your host, “Word Heavyweight Champion” Mr. Joe Walker.

Throughout my illustrious career as an entertainment writer and journalist, I’ve been blessed with opportunities to speak with many notable and famous persons. One of those is hip-hop legend, iconic b-boy, and pastor Kurtis Blow!

During our conversation I asked Kurtis THIS good question: What were the times were like socially when hip-hop really kicked off?

He answered, “We’d just come out of the civil rights movement in the 70s. There was a lot of anger in the ‘hood among African-Americans. Martin Luther King was assassinated. So was Malcom X and JFK.

Then there were the gang wars, and drug wars in Harlem and New York City. It was a rough time.

Then the series ‘Roots’ came on, and it was a week long! It sent a ripple through the Black community! We felt like we’d really come from a long way.

So this music of hip-hop came along and it was like escapism, a savior for young kids and teenagers who were growing up in the ghettos around the country. It became our way of escaping the negative, violent turmoil and crime. It got us through those hard times.” |THIS.
