During a heartfelt phone conversation with hip-hop artist Early N Da Mornin, he informed me not everyone approves of the stance he’s taken to protest the death of George Floyd.

Yet another Black male senselessly killed at the hands of police, this sparked Early to rally as many people as his influence allowed and march their displeasure through the streets of his Kalamazoo, MI community. With the media and others watching, he’s peacefully taken the lead in speaking out publicly.

Early told me he’d been contacted by detractors, each of them accused him of parading to boost his music career. That was disappointing to hear.

So, I’m sending this out to all you people who contacted Early N Da Mornin claiming he’s taken a stand for fame. You’re wrong. Entirely. That’s not the case. Don’t be disrespectful and stop being foolish.

Early’s taken a stand for his family, his community, and our future in this country. He’s putting himself in harm’s way – physically, emotionally, socially and professionally – so that everyone who loves and respects him will see him speaking out and fighting for change. His actions aren’t for fame. They’re for the sake of everything he cares for most.

He’s not some admired celebrity that’s seen on your favorite entertainment outlets, art showcases or professional athletics broadcast. Early is someone in your own community that can embrace you, speak encouragement to you personally, and have the guts to stand out in front on your behalf and be the first to go if necessary.
