‘Gretel & Hansel’, a retelling of the Grimm’s Fairy Tale that frightened children of all ages throughout the ages, is here. It tells the story of two children forced to fend for themselves after being thrown out of their home by their mother who succumbs to madness.

While journeying throughout the countryside they come across a home in the woods and are invited to stay. Little do they know that the inhabitant of the home, an elderly lady, has a sinister fate in store for the two of them. Or does she?

The title of the story gives you a hint into how this version tells the story of the classic tale by focusing on the perspective of Gretel, who is a lot older than her brother Hansel here. To divulge in this choice would take us through spoiler territory, however I liked this retelling for that exact reason along with the stunning cinematography and slow pace that piles on the tension and dread to the climax of the film.

‘Gretel & Hansel’ trades a fast pace and in-your-face horror setup for a more atmospheric and moody setting. While I enjoyed it, I can [understand] those who won’t for the same reason.
