Although not quite up there with the animated classics ‘Up’
and the ‘Toy Story’ series, ‘Onward’ is nonetheless a pretty good family film
with a message of brotherhood that the whole family can enjoy.
‘Onward’ is the story of Ian and Barley, two brothers that happen to be elves
in a multi-species society – something straight out of ‘The Lord of the Rings’
– in which magic is no longer used or appreciated.
Longing to see their deceased father one last time, they go on a quest to
retrieve the items needed to cast the spell that will make this happen all the
while strengthening their brotherly bond along the way.
Featuring the vocal talents of Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Octavia Spencer, [the
film’s] ensemble does the movie justice with colorful characters and funny
performances. The style and direction of the animated movie is what you would
expect from Pixar. No more, no less.
‘Onward’ is a fine addition to the Pixar catalog and it delivers what you would
come to expect in a funny and heartwarming animated adventure that’s not just
for the kids. It has positive messages for adults as well.
