A captain of industry in the area of urban pharmaceutics
finds his empire threatened by up and comers, sleazy tabloids and an unexpected
rival. It’s ‘The Gentleman’. Let’s talk about it!
Matthew McConaughey is Mickey Pearson, an American cannabis king in London who
grew his fortune serving the vices of the city’s elite. And [here he’s] looking
to retire by selling the business.
Charlie Hunnman is Raymond, Pearson’s right-hand man and enforcer. Both are forced to deal with coincidences that sprung up during the process of trying to sell.
[There’s] an attempt at bribery by a private Investigator, a
takeover attempt from a young rival looking to come up, and a slander attempt
from a slighted tabloid publication.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, this is a lot like his other British gangster films – ‘Snatch’, ‘Lock, Stock & Two Smoking
Barrels’. It’s filled with testosterone-driven dialogue, humor undercut with
unexpected violence, and trademark Cockney English dialect. For some viewers
it’s an acquired taste, however, fans will enjoy this one as it has everything
you’d come to expect from this addition to the crime comedy genre.
