What’s enjoyable, for me, about shows like Marvel Studio’s WandaVision is that I enjoy being both intrigued and confused as much as I like to be entertained. All of that happened watching its first episode of Disney+.
Let’s jump immediately to the dinner scene with Avengers couple Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) and their guests, Vision’s boss Mr. Heart (Fred Melamed) and his wife (Debra Jo Rupp). Their visit is ripe with comedic miscommunication, one-liners, and witty sexual innuendos. It’s wholesome-yet-naughty 60’s sitcom setting is fun and funny to watch until it dramatically isn’t.
While eating Mr. Heart begins to choke to death on his food while his wife eerily utters “stop it” over and over like she’s a glitchy video stuck on repeat. Vision looks terrified while Wanda stares off in a trance-like state. It was creepy, uncomfortable, and awesome!
If you’ve followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then you’re aware that Vision died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. This happened right before Wanda got snapped temporarily out of existence.
While many speculate that the Westview setting of WandaVision is happening after the events of the Avengers: Endgame, it’s trippy circumstances could be while both main characters were dead. Being pulled into this questionable-reality guessing game is another thumbs-up aspect of the show.
All the acting on WandaVision is top notch with stark believability, but the crown goes to Kathyrn Hahn as nosey, obnoxious neighbor Agnes. Portrayed as a more over the top variation of Ethel from I Love Lucy, there’s something clearly sinister about her.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode of WandaVision and I’m excited to watch this intriguing, confusing, and entertaining story unfold. |THIS.
