I used to watch Bewitched with my older sisters and sometimes with my grandma. We all would laugh out loud at the show’s ridiculous antics and magical mishaps. Episode 2 of WandaVision opened with a Bewitched-styled intro and all those feeling came back.
And I laughed quite a few times during this episode. Yet, for all its lighthearted humor and, at times, wholesome enchantment, this episode was dark. Very dark. In the end I was far more confused, intrigued and entertained than I was at the close of the first episode.
In the final minutes, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) learned that she was unexpectedly, miraculously, and quiet suddenly well into a pregnancy. She and her cyborg husband Vision (Paul Bettany) were elated until a loud thump startled them.
The episode began with the Avengers couple in bed being spooked by a tree branch slapping their bedroom window. Vision thinking this recent thump could again be a branch, marched outside with Wanda trailing him.
Once they were out there the pair noticed a shadowy beekeeper climbing out of a manhole. The keeper snaps his head around to look at the couple which prompted Wanda to sternly say “No” in the freakiest, creepiest way ever. A split second after that the episode rewinds itself to the moment before they walked outside, only this time there was no startling thump and aesthetics changed from Black & White to Technicolor.
Marvel has us all in the dark with this mysterious Disney+ edition to their Cinematic Universe. We’ve been comparing theories. They’re likely wrong but at least we’re provoked enough to be plot researchers with a desire to keep watching.
Episode 2 gave us more clues to decipher, like everyone in the fictional town of Westview saying “for the children” in a trance-like tone. There’s sure to be ties to Wanda’s out-of-nowhere baby bump.
I can’t wait to watch episode 3! |THIS.
