Negativity and selfishness gets great publicity in our social networking, indirect-contact society. You’d be led to believe the world’s running low on good people and that no one cares for or respects one another anymore. Their only concerns are themselves; and when they’re in need, no one is willing to lend them a hand without reward.
This is not the case. Kind, caring, selflessly-generous people still exist. Zhou Tian is a shining example.
An inspiring composer noted for his lush, beautiful arrangements, Zhou is one of the most gifted musical minds alive today. Internationally revered, his compositions have received tremendous critical acclaim. Such major orchestras as Hong Kong Philharmonic and Minnesota Symphony have performed Zhou’s works, and his melodic creations have echoed throughout such prestigious venues as Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
His masterful “Concerto for Orchestra”, performed by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Contemporary Classical Composition. While good at what he does, he’s also a good person and one who believes in helping others.
I asked Zhou Tian to tell me about a time when he did something nice for someone he didn’t know. Here’s what he shared.
“I helped out a few people that didn’t know what I did.
Basically, I recommended them for different opportunities. I took their music to show other artists and conductors. I promoted their ideas and music without telling them. And that got them, in turn, some great opportunities.
I’m very proud as an educator that I get to meet so many talented people. I look forward to continuing to do that.
I really believe in the power of music. Take orchestra for example. You have 80-plus musicians together, all in the same room, and they all show their musicianship, and they all share the same passion for music making in order to form a unified artistic expression. That’s very much relevant and very much needed in our society today.
That’s why I do what I do.” |THIS.
