The year 2020 was difficult. Despite its many challenges, singer and songwriter Kitty Coen made the most of it.
A rising star based in the bright skies of Austin, Kitty’s magnetic personality is equally as big as Texas. With a silky-smooth voice and songwriting that shines, the Psychedelic Disco Cowgirl is an undeniably attractive talent.
She is currently pulling in smitten listeners with her single “Dark Soul”, a strong indication of her vividly bright future.
Kitty Coen shared some of her time with us by answering THIS questionnaire about her life in 2020 and what to expect from her in 2021.
How would you summarize 2020?
2020 was like paddling up steam in a canoe except both of your paddles are broken off and there is a leak in the boat. You can make it to shore but it’s not going to be easy. That’s how 2020 felt to me.
I kept working as hard as I could for as long as I could but at the end of the day the world was still shut down, and the only thing I could do about it was stay inside and work on my craft. But you know what they say? Just keep swimming.
Which of your blessings would you say was the biggest?
My team. The heart and soul they put into all of my projects is really what kept me going.
As an artist every great idea starts out as a thought or vision. Sometimes you think to yourself, “Oh no, that’s a dumb idea,” but when you let go of the embarrassment factor and explain it to your team, things come to life. Whether it be my producer, my band or the crew working on my videos, they are all a blessing.
Did you read any good books that you would recommend to others?
Matthew McConahay’s Green Light was one hell of a read. 10/10 would recommend.
What was the best song of the year?
“I Know The End” by Phoebe Bridgers. The whole album really. It’s amazing.
What were the movies or television shows that you couldn’t stop watching?
Okay, is this a trick question? Because in quarantine I did some binge watching. But all in all, Ozark and The Queen’s Gambit were my favs.
Who were the artists you listened to the most?
This year was very much about my music. I try not to listen to other artists when working on my music because I will start to subconsciously change my sound and end up with something that just isn’t me. But when I wasn’t listening to Kitty Coen demos it was STRFKR and Tame Impala.
What did you Google the most?
Stop motion animation techniques. I’m obsessed with the movie Coraline and virtually any other stop motion anime movie.
Tell us the most surprising thing you heard all year.
[NO ANSWER]
Where were you when you learned about COVID-19 and how did you respond?
It was Friday the 13th. I was in Downtown Austin preparing for SXSW. We got the news the festival was cancelled because of COVID and everything got real. I cried a little, went to get a tattoo and then went home.
How were you helped and hurt by the pandemic?
I was hurt by the pandemic because I wasn’t able to travel and perform. Hell, I couldn’t even perform in my own city. This took a toll on my numbers, my mental, and my bank account.
I was helped by the pandemic because I was able to slow down and really focus on what’s important to me. Don’t get me wrong, I love music and it’s my biggest dream to be a successful performer, but that’s not everything. I was neglecting my health, personal relationships, and meditation before COVID. After it hit I was forced to reflect on these things.
Did you vote?
YESSSS!
Did 2020 cause you to value your life and the lives of others more than you did already?
Definitely.
I have a very close relationship with my grandparents. They raised me, in a way, because when I was little both of my parents worked a lot. The thought of them passing away because of something that’s completely out of anyone’s control really made me reflect on how fragile life can be.
I felt lucky to be in my early twenties, not having to worry about it like others do. Life is crazy.
What can we expect from you in 2021?
That new new! New tunes, videos, live performances, all of it. I’ve been working hard behind the scenes to give my fans new art they can vibe to.
My first EP will be out spring of 2021! Stay tuned! |THIS.
