Fans of the original Coming to America spent decades fantasizing about a sequel. Now one is finally being released. There is tremendous excitement for the long-awaited Coming 2 America starring Eddie Murphy and most of the original cast.
This has me asking THIS GOOD QUESTION:
Will Coming 2 America be any good?
I sure hope so, but I can’t help being skeptical.
The full-length trailer does a great job selling the movie by using nostalgia.
It shows Murphy as Akeem and Arsenio Hall as Semmi returning to the My-T-Sharp barber shop in Queens, NY. The pair are wearing their same NY-centric clothing, interacting with themselves portraying the shop’s boisterous elder barbers.
We also see Murphy as terrible singer Randy Watson with his band Sexual Chocolate, we’re given a peak of Hall as Rev. Brown, and the trailer confirmed that James Earl Jones, John Amos, and Sheri Headley are back in their original roles too.
Reassembling the cast is essential, but it was the story as well as their performances that made the first movie a classic. I’m skeptical because the trailer showed a lot of rehashing.
This regrettably happened with The Spy Who Shagged Me, the sequel to Austin Powers International Man of Mystery. The Hangover Part II had the same issue. Both films were funny at times but overall they weren’t good.
I’m worried this might be the outcome of Coming 2 America. |THIS.
