About 30 of my friends and school associates were committed, dare I say obsessed with defeating Mega Man 2.
We shared tips, stage orders, and strategies as we made our way through stage bosses Metal Man, Bubble Man, Air Man, Crash Man, Wood Man, Heat Man, Flash Man, and Quick Man to reach Dr. Wily’s Castle.
Getting to Wily’s difficult, heavily fortified fortress was like a trip to Disney World. Both are places we thought we’d never see. Both are full of colors, great music, and wonders. Only one of them, though, is a 100% frustrating murder trap known to cause fits of anger.
Here’s what really made us mad: Once we finally made it to the final stage, we learned that we had to survive a gauntlet of all 8 bosses and then challenge Wily! This proved to be an impossible feat as no weapons appeared to hurt him.
I was the lucky one, being the first who discovered that Wily couldn’t repel the [SPOILER] weapon. And I couldn’t wait to show my friends – which I did in a packed bedroom that erupted with excited-yet-shocked ovation when they saw me defeat him.
Gaming is a shared experience, and the comradery around Mega Man 2 made it one of the greatest video games ever! |THIS ENT
