We got our first look at The Super Mario Bros. Movie on October 6, 2022, courtesy of a simultaneous Nintendo Direct / New York Comic Con trailer reveal. Created by Nintendo and Illumination, the animated big screen adaptation of the classic NES videogame is set for release April 7, 2023.
Here’s what else we know: Bowser (voiced by Jack Black), his sidekick wizard Kamek, and his massive Koopa army invade an icy castle defended by penguins to loot a super star.
Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom where he befriends Toad. They set off on an undisclosed adventure.
Luigi is somewhere running for his life from a riot of skeletal Koopas known famously as Dry Bones.
History tells us that Bowser’s evil plans usually involve kidnapping Princess Peach, who is not featured in the trailer. While based on the game series, the movie could be introducing us to a fresh diabolical scheme for the fire breathing bad guy. Our knowledge of the star is that it makes the holder invincible, yet we can’t help thinking there’s more about to happen.
Based on what we know, we could assume Mario will be the hero along with help from his brother Luigi and others, but perhaps Mario shows up to find his brother. If this is the case, why would Luigi be in the Mushroom Kingdom, or wherever he is, alone?
There’s certainly going to be a slew of merchandise tie-ins to this theatrical release, but will one of them be a brand-new Super Mario Bros. video game based on the events of the movie?
We’ll have to wait until 2023 to find out! |THIS ENT
