Time travel is real. We began our annual “Reflection Q&A Interview Series” six years ago; in each one the participant recounts their likes and growth from the previous year while also sharing what to expect from them in the year to come.
THISENT.com did not exist when the pioneering “15 to 16 Q&A” debuted with another publication in 2016. The beauty of it all is that time has allowed our team to carry the series with us here today.
With that in mind we decided to share the interview with award-winning singer, composer, and producer Candice Hoyes from six years ago!
Following this trip through time, we’ll share what Candice is up to six years later. THIS is for YOU!
What was your favorite song last year?
“Really Love” by D’Angelo is my song. D’Angelo had my vote for that 2016 GRAMMY nomination.
What was your favorite movie?
My favorites this year were Ava DuVernay’s Selma and an incredible independent film about girls’ rights in Ethiopia called Difret by Zeresenay Mehari.
What’s the television show you couldn’t stop watching?
I love Aziz Ansari’s Master of None. Lena Waite is my homegirl, I just haven’t met her yet. The episode about his parents was amazing.
What album did you play the most?
Everyone was checking out Kamasi Washington’s The Epic for good reason. I also adored the soundtrack to Hamilton.
What did you Goggle the most?
Either Serena Williams, and for style, I check out thetailife.com and refinery29.com.
What’s the most shocking news you heard all year?
I was most shocked that in 2015, 1 in 35 Black men are incarcerated, and 1 in 9 Black children have a parent in prison. That is why I work with and support the African American Policy Forum.
Tell how you evolved over the last 12 months.
I’ve taken my music to so many new places, from kicking off the BET Experience to New York Fashion Week. It’s a reminder that this music has the power to impact any audience, and that inspires me to challenge myself. Jazz is at the center of any good love groove, any funk sample that is irresistible. Even when life moves too fast we gravitate to that music.
What was your biggest blessing?
Reviving a side of jazz that so many of us had not heard before has been a thrill, and coming into 2016, that is still on my heart. I can’t wait to tour.
What can your fans and critics expect from you in 2016?
Expect to see me making music on the road, and lots of unexpected, wonderful collaborations, because I’m always evolving musically.
And forget what People Magazine says! Who was the sexiest person of the year?
I have to say Prince, and I’ll choose him every year. That’s my dude. | THIS is for YOU!
