We were presented with an opportunity to conduct THIS INTERVIEW with Lorin Cumberbatch. She told us about why she became a business owner, the challenge she faces, and why she’s excited to be part of The Block Market (Round 2). Enjoy!
The Block Market (Round 2) is such an inviting and valuable community event. What about being a part of it excites you the most?
The thing that excites me most is that I’m surrounded by other business owners that look like me. I can learn so much from them and can understand them so much more. I’m also excited to network.
Which vendor or product, besides your own, are you looking forward to seeing there?
I am most excited to see Nature’s 92 because I’m ready for that strawberry banana sea moss! I’m ready to try a new flavor because the pina colada is everything already! [Laughs]
Why did you become a business owner?
I became a business owner because knowing myself I knew that I would always have my own business. Working for someone was never going to work at all. I don’t like being told what to do but I like telling others what to do. And I like having my freedom of when I want to come and if I want to service customers, etc.
What is it about you that makes what you do attractive?
I truly care about people’s skin and their experience at my business.
A lot of people are so focused on the money they forget about the results, and for me I care more about results than money.
How do you make people, especially when they’re your customers, feel welcome?
I try to treat them like family or [like] they are my best friends. People instantly feel that when they come into my business. They feel at home.
Tell us about your most memorable shopping experience.
My most memorable shopping experience was when I was going into Victoria’s Secret almost every day and they started knowing me by name. It made me feel good because I felt like they knew me which is why I incorporate that into my business.
What challenge do your face consistently and how is it helping you improve your business?
The challenge I experience most is not knowing whether or not I will be open each week.
It has helped my business because I’m constantly trying to be innovative to bring people in or get sales in general. Keeps me on my toes.
Finish this sentence: I want my outcome of The Block Market to be …
…SUCCESSFUL! |THIS.
