A few nights ago, I was chopping vegetables for a stir fry when, suddenly, a feeling of gratefulness came over me.
Not long before that I was watching a portion of A&E’s documentary about late professional wrestling icon Ultimate Warrior. It was telling the story of how WWE, still WWF at that time, built up to Warrior’s epic WrestleMania VI match against Hulk Hogan.
As a longtime professional wrestling fan, that match is one of my favorite childhood memories. Hearing the story made me cry. These weren’t nostalgic tears.
Watching the program made me sad because Ultimate Warrior is my cousin Louis Jr.’s all-time favorite wrestler.
Louis died 2 months ago.
While I was in the kitchen, I started to think about him and all the people who have lost their lives recently to COVID or other circumstances. Even though I was moved and saddened by these thoughts, I realized how blessed I was to still have life.
The next second I was, quite randomly, singing the chorus of “Alive” by group P.O.D. I hadn’t heard or thought of that jam in years, but in an instant it meant more to me than it ever did before!
