All-time great professional wrestler Kenny Omega is collecting championships, and I like it.
Signed to All Elite Wrestling, he is the current AEW World Champion. What I’ve found most intriguing is the championships he’s captured outside his own promotion.
Omega also holds Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide’s AAA Mega Championship and the Unified TNA World Heavyweight/Impact Wrestling World Championship. He’s traveling the world, going from promotion to promotion carrying 4 major titles belts.
Fans are beginning to speculate which championships Omega will target next.
I think the obvious choices are Pro Wrestling Noah’s Global Honored Crown Heavyweight Championship, Revolution Pro Wrestling’s British Heavyweight Championship, Ring of Honor’s ROH World Championship, Major League Wrestling’s MLW World Heavyweight Championship, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
The willingness of these companies to work together, should any of these happen, is great for broader marketing appeal and for the attention and admiration of wrestling fans worldwide.
World Wrestling Entertainment, the biggest and most lucrative wrestling company in the world, tends to operate in their own universe. Omega competing for and winning one of their titles is dreamy but highly unlikely.
WWE should consider changing that. They may not welcome Omega to swagger out on their weekly RAW or Smackdown television shows with all his gold, making a play for their WWE Championship and Universal Championship respectively, but a contest for their NXT Championship could facilitate opening doors to big match, big money opportunities.
I think Omega should call out current NXT Champion Karrion Kross right now. This would get the fans and WWE insiders taking about the match up. It would allow those conversations to swell to loud roars across social media and in organizer meetings, with the possibility of it paying off in front of a packed audience of audible fans. |By Mr. Joe Walker
