The heartbreaking fourth episode of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ multiversal series What If…? opened my eyes wider than they already were. I watched uncomfortably as Dr. Strange absorbed a multitude of dark powers in effort to stop his girlfriend Christine from dying.

Strange’s repeated attempts were futile as we learned from The Ancient One that his lover’s death was “an absolute”, an occurrence that could not be prevented, changed, or undone.

As I watched the episodes that followed, I noticed a significant detail about Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the series.

Early in episode 5 Tony is an undead zombie. He gets beheaded by Wasp shortly thereafter.

In episode 6 Tony never becomes Iron Man because he’s rescued by Killmonger. The savage special forces soldier saves Tony before he gets mortally wounded and captured by the 10 Rings. As the episode progressed, Killmonger’s devious master plan is revealed. He would eventually kill Tony to execute it.

This sent me back to episode 3. In it each of the original Avengers, except Captain America, get assassinated. Tony was the first of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to fall. An ah-ha moment, from there I heard Marvel loud and clear.

I think Tony Stark’s death is an absolute and we’re not done feeling the many ramifications of it in the main MCU timeline or throughout the many iterations of the multiverse. |By M.J. Walker | Photo courtesy of Marvel
