I quote comedians a lot. One of my favorites is from Sinbad.
In his classic HBO special Brain Damaged he joked about women waiting to catch their men doing something they learned about on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
With his lips poked out, nose crinkled, eyes squinted, and voice altered to sound feminine Sinbad said this: “Mmm hmm. Just like Oprah said.”
I say it jokingly whenever I’m right about something.
During my early childhood some of the best cartoons aired at 4PM. Oprah was on at the same time. Since my mother worked until 5PM or later my afternoons were spent at my grandparents’ house.
My grandmother, God rest her soul, had to watch Oprah. This was a house rule. You would get punished for breaking it.
My grandma was typically quiet and mild-tempered. She would get aggressively indignant, though, if you even considered changing the channel while Oprah was on – even during commercial breaks!
Watching a few seconds of Thundercats wasn’t worth a sore butt, no treats, and being isolated in a bedroom. It was best to sit quietly in the living room and watch the talk show with her.
Quoting Sinbad makes me laugh. Thinking about the time I spent watching The Oprah Winfrey Show with my grandma makes me smile.
And I don’t remember anything Oprah actually said, yet I’ll never forget the impact she had on my life. |THIS.
