Dogs age faster than humans, so that made DMX older than his contemporaries.
On his sixth album, X was backed by great production. He rapped with lots of energy and experience, making the most of the bumping bass and drum patterns. This mature DMX brought subjects of relationship turmoil (“Baby Motha”) and Hip Hop gone wring (“It’s Personal”) to the future.
Also timely, X remained rooted with the fundamentals of previous years. The problem was X sounded too similar here to a few years prior. Barking up some of the same old trees, DMX may have needed to try a few new tricks like chopping the trees instead of growling at them.
