When we look back on 2023, we’ll remember a year of triumph, tragedy, and transitions. Among the highlights the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, questioned the validity of elected leadership, mourned countless lives lost in turmoil, and (finally) realized that Rapzilla.com is awesome. In THIS INTERVIEW we revisit the last 12 months from the perspective of singer and songwriter Dea Doyle.

Hailing from West London, The Fleetwood Mac inspired artist shares a flair for song structure and an ability to emote like Stevie Nicks. Whether Dea achieves comparable heights of success remains to be seen, yet her potential is quite visible. She is taking all the steps to be seen and heard for years to come.

Dea took time out of her busy schedule to share some of her thoughts with us, answering THIS questionnaire about her life in 2023 and what to expect from her in 2024. THIS is for YOU!

How would you summarize 2023?

Short. I feel like this [last] year has absolutely flown by.

Tell us how you evolved over the last 12 months.

I think over the last 12 months I have evolved musically in that I write more songs on the piano and less on the guitar and that has changed my writing style slightly. I think I have evolved emotionally too, and my outlook on life is much more optimistic.

Were you able to achieve the goals you set?

I achieved some of my goals in the sense that I released two new singles [last] year and I started gigging again after some time off which felt like a bit of a milestone.

Did you face any challenges that turned out to be blessings?

I’d say with my newest single “One For Me” there were some challenges in the sense of the single being ready but awaiting the video and album artwork, which felt like such a delay at the time but in the long run was definitely worth it.

Who was there for you when you needed them most?

My parents, always.

In what ways were you reminded that you’re valuable?

The support around the release of the single from friends was insane and made me feel very loved.

How did you celebrate your birthday?

I celebrated my birthday in Bristol with some friends, which was so much fun. My birthday often falls during Glastonbury, which I didn’t get tickets to, so spending it with friends took the sting out of not being there.

Which songs were the soundtrack of your life in 2023?

Well according to my Spotify Wrapped, two songs that stood out were “That Life” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears.

What was the best movie you saw, TV show you watched, and live event you attended?

Best Movie: I’ve just seen Saltburn and loved it.

Best TV Show: I recently watched Maid with Margaret Qualley which was so heartbreaking yet empowering.

Best live event: I saw Sam Fender in St James’ Park in June which was amazing and felt like such a milestone in his career. I’m a huge fan.

Did you read or hear anything inspiring or influential that you would recommend to others?

I’m not sure if it’s so much inspiring or influential but I read that Stevie Nicks was 27 when she joined Fleetwood Mac. I feel like the music industry can feel really time-sensitive, and aging can feel scary, but that made feel much calmer about approaching my mid-twenties and feel like I still have time to achieve my goals.

Tell us something you did to help someone in need, whether you knew them or not.

I work with teenagers in a mental health hospital, so I feel like there were a few times where I helped people in need or eased their suffering a little bit by making them laugh or sharing with them a little bit of wisdom.

What can we expect from you in 2024?

In 2024 you can expect new singles, more live shows, and hopefully bigger and better things. | By Mr. Joe Walker
