We’ll remember 2021 as a year of triumphs and tragedies, wins and losses, and unifying optimism and aggravated division. In THIS INTERVIEW we revisit the last 12 months from the perspective of artist and author Birdcap.

Renowned the world over for beautiful, astonishing, breathtaking murals, Birdcap draws, and paints, from the most genuine depths of his heart. His inspirational spirit can also be felt in the pages of his sought-after collectable comics series The Grief Manual.

Birdcap shared some of his thoughts with us by answering THIS questionnaire about his life in 2021 and what to expect from him in 2022.

How would you summarize 2021?

It was a wild year. Felt like riding a bike after a big spill.  Sort of nervous there’s gonna be mud in the gear or the brakes might be off, so you’re peddling a little strange because you can feel something definitely ain’t worked out with the bike yet. [Laughs]

Did you read anything inspiring or influential that you would recommend to others?

Man, not really. My energy been too twisted up to really sit and focus for long periods lately.

What was the best song of the year?

“Rookie of the Year” by Moneybagg Yo

What were the movies or television shows that you couldn’t stop watching?

Mostly listening to old wrestlers getting interviewed on YouTube! [Laughs] Lots of old men reexamining the Attitude Era from every angle. I think I’m a little lost in that nostalgia escape thing. But also it’s such a human experience to see these dudes who were so dedicated to their silly thing be on the other side of it now and having to synthesize it for themselves.

Who or what entertained you the most?

Drawing lots and getting a little more acquainted with the cryptocurrency space. I moved to Chicago, so that took up a good amount of time just sort of nesting the new spot up

What was your favorite social media post – by you or someone you follow?

Man, I’m just dreaming of an income bracket where I can delete all social media.

Tell us the most surprising thing you heard or saw all year.

Ozay Moore said he keeps licorice in his socks. Don’t know what it’s about but he totally surprised me.

How did you evolve over the last 12 months?

Laterally.

In what way has the pandemic affected your outlook on life?

I don’t know if it’s the pandemic or just getting older, but I feel more aware that nothing is stable.

Not my body, not my freedoms, not me or my loved ones’ health, not nations or armies; everything is in flux and you either get cool with being aware of that or you get sideways freaking out about it.

Which of your blessings would you say was the biggest?

My dad’s still around.

Did you experience a defining moment?

I guess extremes are defining, right?

I had some really sad moments and some really happy moments. Living is just wild lately.  Such a dumb way to put something profound.  My most extreme moments are unpredictable and they’re the most alive I was.

What can we expect from you in 2022?

I’ma be a little uglier and hopefully paint a little better and be a little nicer. |THIS ENT
